Setting SMART Goals

Goals are Dreams with Deadlines_graphic3

It’s that time of year, isn’t it? The media is talking about people setting New Year’s Resolutions. They’re talking about how many people set them/or don’t, and how many people keep them for any length of time.  Which camp do you fall in – make them/keep them, make them/get too busy, or don’t make them at all?

Recently I came across this article by Connie Stemmle about resolutions that explained why some many people failed to keep them. They’re not S.M.A.R.T.; the goals – not the people.  In the article, Connie Stemmle goes into some detail about Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Timely goals.

20 in 2020?

Further, she also talks about how to set S.M.A.R.T. goals and the “7 Areas of Your Life for Setting Important Goals.” For example, she gave 20 examples of some 2020 goals.  Now, that’s laudable!  However, is it doable?  Even if they were all S.M.A.R.T. goals, 20 seems overwhelming.  Meanwhile, that’s on top of all of the things that fill your waking hours. Whew! I’m exhausted thinking about it!

Certainly, you want to be successful. What if you just picked 5? Would you pick one that is daily, weekly or once a month? Are those doable? Are you able to breathe? Will you pick them from this list or make your own?  In addition, you can even tweak them to fit your lifestyle, as long as you keep them S.M.A.R.T.  In short, pick ones that you know with which you will be successful. Next year, pick a different 5. Let me know which ones you picked!
